For the whole preseason, Michael Crabtree, the 10th overall pick of the 2009 April’s draft, has been known for holding out because of contract dispute. The San Francisco 49ers, which picked Crabtree, have not given him a contract that could satisfy the wide receiver. However, recent news gave another reason for Crabtree’s holdout: the New York Jets were tampering with him.
That may explain why Crabtree did not accept the 49ers’ offer for approximately five years and $20 million, with a reported $16 million guaranteed. Early reports said that the rookie was seeking money comparable to higher picks, but Monday reports said that the 49ers have filed tampering charges against the Jets in connection with the holdout. The 49ers felt that there was a scheme between Jets and Crabtree and that was why he threatened to sit out the 2009 season. They may think that Crabtree did all those things just to obtain the chance of wearing jets jersey nstead of 49ers jersey.
Crabtree has said that he would rather go back into next year’s National Football League entry draft if he could not get a satisfying contract. If there was indeed a scheme, was it to pick Crabtree in next year’s draft or to exhaust the 49ers’ patience and wait for them to waive on their top draft pick? Well, it is interesting to have a guess.
