Delhomme not to lose his starting job in Panthers

The Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme was glad that he will start for the Panthers against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, after being beleaguered for a miserable seven-game stretch of 18 interceptions and three lost fumbles.

Panthers Coach John Fox made the decision after a couple of days to think about it, considering that Delhomme is still the best option for starting quarterback ahead of other quarterabcks in Panthers jerseys such as backups Matt Moore and A.J. Feeley.

“The 48-hour rule, you go back and you look and there’s no question that we’ve struggled in that area,” Fox said. “Going through and looking at some of our mishaps, I don’t think it’s one guy. I still think he gives us the best chance to win.”

Since he replaced Rodney Peete at halftime of the 2003 season opener and led the Panthers to a Super Bowl berth, it was the first time Delhomme was facing danger of losing his starting job after Sunday’s 20-9 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He was prepared for being benched. Eventually, Fox decided to keep him on the spot after being noncommittal on Monday instead of backing the quarterback as usual.
